Over 1.3 Million Indian students are currently pursuing higher education abroad in 2024, according to recent government data presented in Parliament. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, disclosed this information in response to questions about the government's tracking of emigrant students.

- Total Number of Students: As of 2024, 13,35,878 Indian students are studying abroad. 

- Top Destinations: The United States and Canada are the most popular destinations, hosting 3,37,630 and 4,27,000 Indian students respectively. 

- Other Countries: Smaller numbers of students are studying in countries like China (8,580), Greece (8), Israel (900), Pakistan (14), and Ukraine (2,510).

The Indian government has been proactive in engaging with Indian students abroad through various initiatives: 

- Welcome Ceremonies: Indian Missions/Posts abroad organise welcome ceremonies for new students, providing them with essential information on security and other issues. 

- Registration Encouragement: Students are encouraged to register with Indian Missions/Posts or on the Global Rishta Portal to stay connected. 

- Data Collection: Indian Missions/Posts collect data on Indian students through voluntary registrations and coordination with host country authorities.
